U035 - The Revamped Morbidity and Mortality Conference - A Must for All Dermatology Practices

Saturday, March 2; 7:30 AM - 8:30 AM

Learning Objectives

Following this course, the attendee should be able to:

  • Describe the composition and structure of a Morbidity and Mortality (M&M) conference designed specifically for dermatology
  • Recognize the value of M&M conference in identifying and mitigating risk within current care delivery systems
  • Identify key areas of focus, including high risk medication monitoring and the biopsy pathway, where interventions can positively impact patient safety

Description

This session will explore the characteristics of a modern M&M conference and its relevance to all practicing dermatologists; leaving attendees with the skill and will to develop similar programs in their own practice. The traditional focus on adverse outcomes or attributing blame is replaced by a discussion of drivers of behavioral choices and system flaws that contribute to potential for harm. Through case discussion this session will explore how multidisciplinary conversations around error can lead to improvements in patient safety. Several key areas will be covered including high-risk medication prescribing, biopsy pathway and surgery.
