S007 - Caring for LGBT patients: What dermatologists need to know

Learning Objectives

Following this course, the attendee should be able to:

  • Summarize LGBT-related health disparities, including dermatology-related and overall health disparities.
  • Discuss best practices for eliciting a history related to sexual orientation, sexual behavior, and gender identity from patients in dermatology settings.
  • Apply recommendations from CDC and other public health agencies related to health promotion and disease prevention among LGBT persons.

Description

This session aims to better enable dermatologists to provide medically appropriate and culturally sensitive care to LGBT persons. Topics include an overview of LGBT health; a perspective from a transgender patients; dermatology-related aspects of care for LGBT persons; best practices for eliciting a sexual and gender identity history from patients in dermatology settings; caring for LGBT persons in non-LGBT-friendly areas; improving LGBT-related education for dermatologists.
