S035 - Cochrane Skin Evidence Based Dermatology Symposium

Saturday, March 2; 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Learning Objectives

Following this course, the attendee should be able to:

  • Recruit patients and physicians to the gold standard processes of systematically finding the best evidence to support health care decision making in dermatology embodied by Cochrane Skin.
  • Evaluate new forms of systemic reviews, such as diagnostic test accuracy systemic reviews for skin cancer detection, and their emerging importance in clinical dermatology guidelines development.
  • Compare the strengths and weaknesses of Cochrane Skin Systematic reviews with other systematic reviews guiding clinical therapy for skin disease.

Description

Healthcare decisions are often made without the fullest consideration of therapeutic effectiveness and safety due to the challenge of critically evaluating and summarizing the latest medical evidence. Information appears in thousands of journals and the results of one study may be different from, or even contradictory to, the results of another study--making it difficult to draw conclusions. We will highlight current efforts to address this challenge by Cochrane Skin (skin.cochrane.org), the dermatology branch of the world's leading not-for-profit evidence-based medical information organization, the Cochrane Collaboration (cochrane.org). AAD Cochrane fellows will describe their current work and future plans.
