U025 - Taking Care of Gay Men and Other Men Who Have Sex with Men: What the Dermatologist Needs to Know
Saturday, July 28; 4:30 PM - 5:30 PM
Following this course, the attendee should be able to:
- Describe the epidemiology of HIV, STDs, and other health issues among men who have sex with men (MSM).
- Summarize MSM-specific recommendations from CDC and other public health agencies regarding HIV and STD testing, vaccinations, and pre-exposure prophylaxis for HIV (PrEP) and post-exposure prophylaxis for HIV (PEP).
- Identify a sensitive and practical method of eliciting a sexual history from MSM patients.
Men who have sex with men (MSM) experience many health disparities, particularly related to HIV infection and STDs. Dermatologists taking care of MSM with cutaneous manifestations of HIV or other STDs, or with general dermatologic concerns, have opportunities to implement (or at least inform patients about) recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) regarding MSM-specific HIV and STD screening, vaccinations, and HIV pre- and post-exposure prophylaxis. Aimed at practicing general dermatologists, this course reviews those screening, vaccination, and prophylaxis recommendations; summarizes relevant epidemiology; and offers tips on improving competency and comfort in taking a sexual history.
